DESERT SUNSET STYLED SHOOT | SOUTH MOUNTAIN PARK | TEMPE, ARIZONA

Back in early November, I attended a photography conference called ShowIt UNITED! You may have seen me posting about it on Facebook and Instagram! I flew all the way to Phoenix, Arizona to attend this amazing conference with just over 250 other photographers! I had the opportunity to hear from so many talented men and women in the industry through the key speakers and smaller breakout sessions. I also got to participate in some styled shoots hosted by other photographers! One of the shoots I got to photograph was a sunset bride & groom session at South Mountain Park in Tempe. Today I’m sharing some gorgeous portraits and behind-the-scenes from the sunset portrait styled shoot hosted by James & Jess Photography – a husband and wife photography team based in Santa Barbara, CA! They were SO fun to be around and learn from. Check out some of my favorites photos from that desert sunset styled shoot! It was a blast to shoot in the desert!

ONE OF MY FAVORITES!desert-sunset-22Something that you probably don’t realize about these images is that I’m shooting alongside 24 other photographers who are trying to capture the same thing! Typically, photographers will set up a private styled shoot that only they will capture… but in workshop scenarios like this, there are several photographers working on the same shoot! Here’s a glimpse of some of the photographers from this session! In that case, we have to work around each other. photogs-1So, sometimes, the models will be looking at one person and then once that person gets their shot, they’ll move aside to let someone else up front. With group styled sessions, I try to capture different angles sometimes and get creative with my angles to shoot something other than the obvious… like this next shot where the models aren’t looking at me… but I love it!desert wedding tempe arizonadesert-sunset-28desert wedding tempe arizona

Oh, hey, James…desert-bts-7desert wedding tempe arizona“Now jog a little bit…”desert wedding tempe arizonadesert wedding tempe arizonaSo cute!desert wedding tempe arizonaAnother behind the scenes is that when dresses are donated for styled shoots, they often don’t fit the model perfectly so clamps have to be used to make it fit! It’s another piece of the puzzle that we as photographers have to be aware of when snapping pictures! No one wants those bright orange handles in a photo!desert-sunset-60desert-sunset-62desert-sunset-69desert wedding tempe arizonaI liked this moment! You can see the blur of someone’s head in the foreground… but I kind of like it!
